How does a 3-way ball valve work?

Understanding Three-Way Ball Valves: A Comprehensive Guide

Ball valves play a crucial role in controlling flow within various applications. In certain situations, a three-way ball valve becomes essential. But how does a three-way ball valve function? This informative guide from BM Engineering will explore everything you need to know about three-way ball valves, including their operation and different types.

What is a Three-Way Ball Valve?

A three-way ball valve is a ball valve with three ports, configured either to divert flow in two different directions, or to mix flow, depending on the porting configuration.

Types of Three-Way Ball Valves

There are two primary types of three-way ball valves: L-Port and T-Port. The designations “L” and “T” stem from the shape of the opening inside the valve.

  • L-Port Valves: These are primarily employed for diverting flow in one direction or another.
  • T-Port Valves: These versatile valves allow for various configurations based on the port setup. T-Port valves can also facilitate mixing flows by channelling fluid to or from both sides of the Tee.

How Does a Three-Way Ball Valve Work?

A ball valve operates by turning through 90° to either open or close the valve. A three-way ball valve functions similarly: turning the valve rotates the ball within the valve body. This movement aligns the hollow centre of the ball with the inlets and outlets. In an L-Port valve, fluid is redirected through the valve at a 90° angle between ports. In a T-Port valve, the ball can send fluid from one port to another while also allowing for mixing at the “T” position, connecting all three ports.

Key Characteristics of a Three-Way Ball Valve

Some of the typical attributes of three-way ball valves include:

  • Frictionless Operation: Open or close without any friction.
  • Single Seat Design: Simplifies construction.
  • Low Torque Requirement: Reduces the force needed to operate the valve.
  • Self-Cleaning Capability: Minimizes maintenance needs.

Advantages of Using a Three-Way Ball Valve

Employing a three-way ball valve in your application offers several benefits:

  • Compact and Lightweight: Simple structure reduces volume.
  • Low Fluid Resistance: Enhances flow efficiency.
  • Reliable Sealing: Ensures leak-free operation.
  • Convenient Operation: Quick to open and close.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for a range of sizes from DN15 to DN150.
  • High Pressure and Vacuum Compatibility: Performs under demanding conditions.
  • Media Separation: The ball and sealing face are isolated from the media when opened or closed.
