How ultrasonic level transmitters work

BM Engineering Supplies stocks a number of different Level Transmitters from Bürkert. One of our most popular line of products is ultrasonic level transmitters. This blog explains how these useful measurement devices work, as well as giving you more information about our high quality Bürkert products.

How do ultrasonic level transmitters work?

Ultrasonic level transmitters work in a similar way to non-contact radar level transmitters. However, rather than using radio waves, they use ultrasonic pulses to measure levels. Typically, an ultrasonic transducer is mounted at or near the top of the container. It sends out its the pulse, which hits the surface of the liquid and is reflected. Based on the time differential between the pulse and return signal, the sensor then calculates the fill level.

Bürkert Type 8176

Bürkert’s Type 8176 is a non-contact ultrasonic level transmitter, which is made for continuous level measurement in open or closed vessels. This unit is suitable for liquids as well as solids; the unit can be used in nearly all industries, particularly in water and wastewater management. Unlike the Bürkert 8178, this transmitter is ATEX approved however, it does have a smaller compact for level measurement.

Features and benefits:

  • Compact for level measurement up to 5m.
  • 4…20 mA/Hart – 2 wires.
  • Suitable for solids.
  • ATEX approvals.

While Bürkert’s Type 8178 is a non-contact ultrasonic level transmitter, designed for continuous level measurement in open or closed vessels. The unit is suitable for liquids, but also for solids, in virtually all industries, particularly in water and wastewater management.

Features and benefits:

  • Compact for level measurement up to 15m.
  • 4…20 mA/Hart – 2 wires.
  • Suitable for solids.
